When a homeowner searches "plumber near me" or "roof repair [city]", Google usually shows a map with three businesses before any normal results. That map is called the Local Pack (or Map Pack), and for home service businesses it's often where most of the calls go.
This guide covers what actually moves your ranking in the Map Pack, in plain English.
How Google decides who shows up
Google says local results are based mainly on three things:
- Relevance: how well your business matches what someone searched for.
- Distance: how close you are to the searcher, or the location they searched for.
- Prominence: how well known and trusted your business is, including reviews and links from around the web.
You can't change distance, but you can influence relevance and prominence a lot.
Step 1: Complete your Google Business Profile
Your Google Business Profile is the single most important local SEO asset you have.
- Choose the most accurate primary category (for example "Roofing contractor"), then add relevant secondary categories.
- Fill in every field: services, service areas, hours, description and business attributes.
- Add real photos of your team, vehicles and finished work, and keep adding them.
- Use the same business name, address and phone number everywhere.
Don't add keywords to your business name or use a virtual office address. Both break Google's guidelines and can get a profile suspended.
Step 2: Get reviews consistently
Reviews influence both your ranking and whether people call you.
- Ask every happy customer, right after the job, with a direct review link.
- Reply to every review, good or bad, politely and quickly.
- Aim for a steady flow of reviews rather than a burst followed by silence.
Never buy reviews or offer rewards for positive ones. It violates Google's rules and consumer protection laws.
Step 3: Build service and location pages
Your website tells Google what you do and where.
- Create one page per main service (roof repair, roof replacement, storm damage and so on).
- Create pages for your most important service areas, with genuinely local content: projects you've done there, local considerations, and the questions customers there ask.
- Link each page to your Google Business Profile and your contact page.
Step 4: Keep your details consistent across the web
Listings on directories like Yelp, Bing Places, Apple Business Connect, the BBB and industry directories help Google trust your business details. What matters most is that your name, address and phone number match everywhere.
Step 5: Make your website fast and mobile-friendly
Most local searches happen on phones. A slow, hard-to-use site loses callers even if you rank well. Aim for a fast mobile load time, a tap-to-call button and a short quote form on every page.
Step 6: Prepare for AI search
More people now ask AI assistants for recommendations. Clear service pages, structured data (schema) and honest, specific answers to common questions make it easier for AI tools to understand and mention your business.
How long does local SEO take?
Fixing your profile and website can help within weeks. Ranking higher in competitive areas usually builds over two to four months and keeps compounding as reviews and content grow.
