Reviews are one of the first things people look at when they find you on Google. They help customers decide whether to call, and they are one of the signals Google uses to decide which local businesses to show in the Map Pack.
The good news: most happy customers are willing to leave a review. They just need to be asked at the right moment, in the right way. This guide shows you how to do that, and which shortcuts to avoid so you don't lose the reviews you earn.
Why Google reviews matter so much
- They build trust before the first call. A steady stream of recent, genuine reviews tells people you are active and reliable.
- They help local rankings. Google's own guidance lists prominence as a local ranking factor, and review count and rating are part of how prominent your business looks.
- They answer questions for you. Reviews that mention a specific job, area or staff member show new customers exactly what to expect.
Rule one: ask every customer, not just the happy ones
Google's review policies don't allow review gating: asking customers how they feel first and only sending the happy ones to Google. Offering discounts, gifts or other rewards for reviews isn't allowed either, and the US Federal Trade Commission has rules against fake and paid reviews.
So the safe approach is simple: ask every customer for honest feedback, the same way. If you do good work, most of what comes back will be positive, and the occasional critical review makes the rest look more believable.
When to ask for a review
Timing makes the biggest difference. Ask when the customer is happiest:
- Right after the job is finished and they've seen the result.
- When they thank you or say something positive.
- After a problem is solved quickly, for example an emergency repair.
Waiting a week usually means the moment has passed. The best time is the same day.
Make it effortless
Every extra step loses people. To make leaving a review as easy as possible:
- Get your direct review link. In your Google Business Profile, choose "Ask for reviews" and copy the short link. It opens the review box straight away.
- Send it by text. Most customers will leave a review from their phone within minutes if the link is in a text message.
- Add a QR code to invoices, business cards or the leave-behind sheet after a visit.
- Put the link in your email signature and on your website's thank-you page.
What to say: three simple scripts
In person:
"I'm really glad we could sort that out today. Would you mind leaving us a quick Google review? It helps other people in the area find us. I'll text you the link."
By text:
"Hi Sarah, thanks for choosing us for your roof repair today. If you have a minute, an honest review would really help our small business: [link]. Thank you!"
By email:
"Thanks again for trusting us with your project. If you were happy with the work, we'd be grateful for a short review on Google. It takes about a minute: [link]."
Keep it short, personal and honest. Use the customer's name and mention the job.
Reply to every review
Replying shows future customers that you care, and it encourages more people to review.
- Positive reviews: thank them by name and mention the job briefly. Keep it natural, not a copy-paste message.
- Negative reviews: reply calmly and professionally, apologise for the experience, and offer to sort it out offline. Never argue in public. A good reply to a bad review can win more trust than a perfect rating.
Mistakes that can cost you reviews
- Buying reviews or writing your own. These can be removed, and they can put your profile at risk.
- Offering a discount for a review. Even for honest reviews, incentives break the rules.
- Asking everyone on the same day. A sudden burst of reviews looks unnatural. Ask steadily, after each job.
- Asking staff, friends or family who aren't real customers.
Build it into your routine
The businesses with the most reviews aren't luckier. They simply ask every time. Make it part of finishing every job: complete the work, check the customer is happy, and send the review link before you leave. A few reviews a week adds up quickly.
